How to Get Rid Of Underarm Stains On Shirts

Underarm stains on shirts can depreciate and reduce the quality of fabrics used in the making of clothes, therefore it is important to know how to get rid of stains. The materials needed for washing stains form shirts are one tablespoon of white vinegar, a tablespoon of Aqua Ammonia, four tablespoons baking soda and two aspirin tablets. Other products and materials that are effective to remove stains are four tablespoons salt and a tablespoon of lemon juice.

The usual causes of underarm stains on shirts are deodorant and perspiration. For preventing stains, the shirt should not be exposed to heat as colorless stains can be turned into yellow color. It is very important to pre-soak or pre-treat the stains in this particular case.


Before washing the shirt and clothes having underarm stains, they should be soaked into a gallon of water with a tablespoon of white vinegar. Then, four tablespoons baking soda has to be mixed with ¼ cup of water. A finger brush can be used to scrub the paste to the clothes for washing out perspiration stains. Meat tenderizer is a good alternative of baking soda. Bleach should be avoided as it has chemicals that can make the perspiration stains dark.


When the shirts are soaked, the simple steps in this post-soaking solution can be followed. Mix a tablespoon of ammonia with half cup of water. The mixture has to be spread out in the affected part of the clothes. If this solution is not successful in removing the stains, mix a tablespoon of lemon juice with half cup of water and soak the armpits in the mixture for at least a couple of hours.

Other Solutions

In case all the solutions mentioned totally fail to wash out the underarm stains, then try the aspirin solution. Two tablets of aspirin have to be dissolved in half cup of water. The affected part of the cloth has to be soaked in to the solution for at least three hours. The it can be washed with detergent soap and left to dry.

Dry Cleaning

It is hard to remove or treat old stains. For convenience, the best option is to take the stained clothes to professional dry cleaners. In most cases, old and stubborn attains are removed by dry cleaning as they use different types of tools and cleaning agents to get rid of underarm stains on shirts.

Eliminating Foul Odor

For eliminating foul odor caused by stains, four tablespoons of salt have to be mixed in a gallon of water. Then, the clothes have to be soaked in to the solution for as less as ten hours. It can be then washed with detergent soap and dried.
