The tree’s bark protects it from a wide host of insects and parasites. It serves as the tree’s skin and when removed, it shows the tissue underneath it and makes it susceptible to infection that can lead to premature death.

Man is usually responsible for causing damages to a tree’s bark. The bark is damaged when equipment such as tree trimmers or mowers are used. There are ways on how the bark can be repaired. Within one year, the bark will go back to how it used to look before the damage.

The tree repair guidelines are for younger trees. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done for an old tree.

When damage has occurred, you must look for the piece of damaged bark and put it back onto the tree. You can strap it with a duct tape to hold it up well even in wet weather.

Wait for 3 months. Keep checking during this period to make sure the tape has held the piece of bark. If it slips then secure it back immediately. After 3 months, remove the tape completely.

If there is no bark to put back on the tree, the best way to help it recover is to make the cut clean as much as possible. The damaged or torn part must be taken off with a blade or sharp knife. Cut the area into an eye shape. This will help the tree heal much faster.

The main problems with damaged trees are when insects hide in the wound. This can cause infection to the tree. When the tree is healed well and the scar becomes neat, the insects will not be able to get into the wound and cause further damage to the tree.

There are a few tree healing products available in the market. These products claim to repair the tree simply by spraying content that looks like black paint. We still have to see how real these products are and if it can actually bring a tree to heal. It might limit the tree’s natural ability to heal or may slow down the healing process. It is better to stick to natural methods of curing a damaged tree knowing that allowing the tree to heal itself does work.

Apply immediate cure. It is of utmost importance that the tree is taken care of as soon as the damage has occurred to lessen the chances of developing homes for insects and other parasites. This should also give the tree a faster chance of healing well and giving out a solid scar. Make sure you inform your gardeners, if you have them, about any damage that has taken place so you can start the tree repair process as soon as possible.
