How to Clean Microwave

Microwave being one of the most used kitchen appliances in many households, there are different methods of cleaning it. You can decide to clean it using lemon and water method or baking soda method in the interior. Choose a mild detergent and use it in cleaning the exterior of the microwave. Remember it’s always advisable to clean the microwave’s interior using natural methods since it has direct contact with food.

Water and lemon method:

Requirements

  • Lemon fruit
  • cup of water
  • Microwave safe cup
  • Scouring pad or sponge

Procedure

  1. Cut the lemon into two halves. Squeeze them and mix with water. Remember to remove all the lemon seeds.
  2. Put the mixture into a microwave safe cup then put it in the microwave oven.
  3. Set the oven to heat the water till it boils by heating for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Leave the microwave for a minute before opening to cool.
  5. Open the microwave and remove the cup. The evaporated lemon juice will have loosened the dirt in the interior of the microwave. Use a damp sponge to clean the dirt. Remember to keep the oven open after cleaning to air dry it.

You can alternatively cut the lemon into small slices put them in the oven plate, add a spoonful of water and heat for 2 minutes, then clean it.

Tips:

The water lemon solution loosens the dirt, while the lemon smell leaves the microwave with a fresh smell.

Baking soda method

Requirements

  • Microwave safe cup.
  • Baking soda.
  • Scouring pad.
  • Spoon.

Course of action:

  1. Prepare a cleaning solution from the baking soda and water. Mix four tablespoons of the baking soda with a glass of water. Mix well until all the baking soda dissolves. Use this solution to clean the interior of the microwave. When through, wipe it to dry.
  2. You can also mix three tablespoons of the baking soda with a cup of water. After mixing well, transfer the solution in to the microwave cup and put the cup into the microwave. Heat for 2-3 minutes until the water boils. Do not open the oven immediately; leave it for a minute to cool. After removing, carefully wipe the interior of the oven using a damp cloth.

Remember leaving the baking soda in the microwave will help stop it from accumulating odors.

How to clean the microwave exteriors:

Requirements

  • Water
  • Detergent
  • Scouring pad
  • Sponge

Course of action

  1. Clean the tray carefully using the detergent and water. Leave it to dry.
  2. Using the scouring pad and sponge carefully clean the microwaves exteriors and the cord.

These procedures will ensure your microwave is clean without use of any harmful chemicals. You can also consider using commercial microwave cleaner. Be keen when handling the lemon or the baking soda, they are acidic and exposure to human eyes can have adverse effects to your health. Wear gloves to avoid being burned by the steam when removing the microwave safe cup from the oven.
