How a Generator Works

Generators are meant for converting mechanical energy from various power sources like gasoline, water, steam and wind, these are some of the sources which generators use for producing electricity. This makes one curious to know how generators really work.

The power of electromagnetic induction

The foundational principle behind the working of generators is the process called electromagnetic induction. The power sources mentioned above are converted into electrical energy through the process of electromagnetic induction. A copper coil between two magnets rotates near a wire in a generator. This makes a steady flow of electrons from the generator with the help of an electric circuit. This is the main process behind the working of any type of generator.

The generators which are commonly used in home during power breakdowns are gas powered generators. These generators use gas as the main fuel for generating mechanical energy. These are definitely only temporary power sources used for powering home appliances. A number of homes hook up these generators to the electrical system making it a permanent backup source of electricity in events of power breakdowns.

On the other hand, wind powered generators have propellers that turn with the blowing of wind consequently producing mechanical energy. The rotating propeller turns the rotor to the main shaft which spins the generator and electricity is produced as a result. Wind turbines are used for producing electricity for domestic purposes distributed by means of power grids.

Generators can be further classified according to their sizes. Standby generators are big and can not be easily moved. These can be stationed or installed on different locations. They can only provide temporary quantity of power for organizations or homes during power breakdowns.

The generators which are easily movable are portable generators and are usually smaller in size. These type of generators are used in camping sites and construction sites because they are for providing temporary sources of power. The working of generators despite their size is simply understood by knowing their making principles. The power source used for obtaining mechanical energy does not matter.
