How Does Stress Affect Health?

Stress is man’s physical response to the changes that require adjustments. The response covers physical, emotional, mental, and psychological reactions. Stressful situations can strain the brain and allows it to go to a “fight or flight” mode. Flight is when the person escapes the stress-causing situations or fight to face them. But stress enables humans to give quick impulsive responses.

The “fight or flight” mode is encouraged by stress hormones. Some of these hormones are adrenalin, dorpamine, cortisol, nonadrenalin, and endorphins. These hormones cause the body to have a surge of energy when pumped into the blood stream. The body then reacts to a given situation with the aid of the hormones.

The said hormones are also responsible for speeding up the person’s heart rate, blood flow, brain activity, and breathing process. It can briefly stop digestion to conserve energy and encourage muscle tension.

Not all people are aware that not all kinds of stress are harmful or negative. Eustress is a positive form of stress that makes people feel excited and happy. A little amount of stress can keep the human brain alert making it perform better leading to better reactions and responses.

Commonly, stress is known to harm the body. Stress can be negative to a person when he eliminates all that has to do with slowing down even a little bit and relaxing. When a person is overworked, tensed, and burned out the stress that comes out of it is negative.

Too much stress can hurt people. Mild symptoms include headaches and having a weaker immune system making the body susceptible to common diseases.

Severe and chronic stress can cause extensive damage. Chronic stress is considered one of the major causes of health related problems today. Studies show that chronic stress is related to major causes of death. Heart diseases and cancers are examples.

Other diseases can also be triggered by unwanted stress. Psychological problems like depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and anxiety disorders can be caused by stress. This deteriorates a person’s health. High cholesterol or hypertension are few examples and might lead to strokes, diabetes, digestive ulcers, and obesity.

Stress can ruin relationships such that it can even cause sexual dysfunction or aggression. This makes the individual function irrationally and less as a social being.

Stress can also be associated with substance abuse. Findings show that a number of people using tobacco, alcohol, and prohibited drugs alleviate their stress levels. These substances do not help in curing stress but may be temporary consolations that lead to long-term destruction.
